Move & Heal: Cultivating a Mind-Body Connection

We are very excited to have Vassia Demiri come and guide you through her Move & Heal workshops, which is rooted in Dance Movement Therapy. This workshop is designed to help you connect mind and body through movement, offering a space for healing, self-expression, and deeper emotional processing.

What is Dance Movement Therapy?

Dance therapy is a form of psychotherapy based on the idea that the mind and body are inseparably connected. Through physical movement, we can externalize psychological and physical blockages that we may struggle to express verbally.

Thoughts and emotions that were never expressed are stored in our bodies and can negatively impact our mental well-being. Movement serves as a way to access emotions and thoughts, allowing us to process them on a deeper level. This combination of physical and mental expression offers a therapeutic pathway that enhances self-awareness and mental well-being.

What is the method of Dance Movement Therapy?

Our primary tool is physical expression, which reflects our emotional and psychological state. Think about what your body reveals when you are happy, sad, or afraid. The body's posture, movements, and reactions say a lot about how we feel.

Every small change we allow in our body — in our posture, the way we walk, or how we listen and interact with others — can pave the way for the change we desire in our lives. Through this physical adjustment, we can discover new perspectives and experience emotional renewal.

Why will Move & Heal help me?

Move & Heal provides the necessary space and time to express and move freely, without limitations or fear of judgment. It is important to have a safe environment where each participant can connect with their body and address their physical and emotional needs. The goal is to silence the critical voice that says, "What am I doing?", "How do I look?", "I've never done this before", or "This feels strange", so we can release anything weighing us down. Through this process, we can feel free, express what we truly feel, and embrace change and healing.

What are the benefits of Dance Therapy?

  • Learning to listen to my body: Dance Therapy helps me become aware ofwhat my body is telling me, recognizing physical tensions and my needs.

  • Emotional expression: Through movement, I can express emotions that may be difficult to articulate with words, promoting emotional release.

  • Self-awareness: As I discover my movement patterns and emotional reactions, I develop a deeper understanding of myself and my needs.

  • Social interaction: In group sessions, Dance Therapy offers the opportunity to connect with others through movement, enhancing communication and a sense of community.

  • Positive impact on mental health: Physical activity and emotional expression help reduce anxiety and depression, improving overall mental well-being.

These workshops are for everyone, beginners and seasoned movers alike.

Vassia Demiri was born in Athens on May 23, 1991. Her love for dance began at a very young age. At the age of 18, she started studying at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the Department of Communication and Mass Media. Shortly after, she took the entrance exams for professional dance schools and began attending the "Rallou Manou"Higher Professional Dance School. She graduated in 2015 and immediately traveled abroad to enrich her knowledge. She had the opportunity to participate in seminars with Akram Khan, Hofesh Shechter, Edivaldo Ernesto, and others. She returned to Athens and decided to work with children. In 2016, she began working at amateur dance schools, where she taught music and movement to children as young as 3 and ballet to children up to 18 years old. At the same time, she collaborated with children on the island of Kythira, organizing ballet and contemporary dance lessons. From 2018 to 2020, she started teaching contemporary dance to adults. After the Covid period, she moved abroad to the city of Prague, where she continued teaching contemporary dance to adults and ballet to children. In early 2024, she returned to Athens to complete her first Yoga diploma and began studying Dance Movement Therapy at the Center for Psychotherapy through the Arts. She continues to expand her knowledge and enrich her teachings with new and more effective methods. She created the Move & Heal Workshop, which is based on Dance Movement Therapy principles and has successfully conducted it in both Athens and rural areas, aiming to contribute her part to the exploration of the self through movement.
